ew places embody Gilbert’s love of animals better than Cosmo Dog Park. Named in honor of the city’s first police pup, this park invites your free-spirited dog to run around 17 acres, leap into a lake from the dog beach, and practice their skills on an obstacle course. Crossroads Dog Park offers two fenced runs, plus water stations and shaded picnic areas.

ature-loving dogs will wag their tails at the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, a 110-acre wildlife sanctuary with hiking paths and plenty of rabbit- and bird-spotting. For the urban-minded pup, stroll the open-air shopping center SanTan Village, where leashed dogs are welcome in the common areas. Get some exercise on the 135-mile Central Trail System. When it’s time to rest, stop at one of the parks along the way. Each offers drinking fountains and grassy areas perfect for a cat—er, dog—nap.
